What Is Your Dog Trying to Tell You?

Understanding canine body language and behaviour

Your dog may not speak, but they’re always communicating.

From tail wags to yawns, dogs use body language and subtle signals to express how they’re feeling—and learning to read those signs can help you respond with confidence, care, and calm.

At Chrysidis Pet Care in Gateshead, I’ve spent over 30 years understanding the emotional language of dogs. Here’s what your dog might be trying to tell you.

1. Soft Eyes & Slow Tail Wag = I’m Happy and Relaxed

A relaxed posture, soft blinking eyes, and a gently wagging tail mean your dog is feeling safe and content.

2. Yawning or Lip Licking (When Not Tired or Hungry) = I’m Anxious

These subtle signs often get overlooked, but they can be your dog’s way of saying they’re uncomfortable, unsure, or trying to de-stress.

3. Pacing, Whining, or Barking = I Need Something

These behaviours may indicate boredom, a need to toilet, hunger—or just a desire for your attention. If persistent, it might signal separation anxiety or a need for more routine.

4. Turning Away or Hiding = I Feel Overwhelmed

Some dogs walk away from people or turn their heads to avoid direct eye contact when they’re stressed. Give them space and a calm environment.

5. Sleeping Close to You = I Trust You

If your dog rests near you or follows you from room to room, that’s not just clinginess—it’s affection, loyalty, and deep trust.

Why This Matters at Chrysidis Pet Care

Because I care for only a few dogs at a time, I’m able to watch closely and respond to their body language.
