A calm guide for owners after their pup’s first stay
Your dog’s first boarding stay is over—and now you’re wondering:
“Are they supposed to act a little different?”
“Did they have a good time?”
At Chrysidis Pet Care in Gateshead, I’ve welcomed hundreds of dogs for home-based stays, and I’ve seen all the common behaviors that follow a stay—even when everything went perfectly.
Here’s what’s normal, what to watch for, and how to help your dog settle back in smoothly.
1. They Might Be a Little Sleepy
Many dogs come home and nap hard. That’s normal! New experiences—meeting new people, exploring a different space—are mentally and physically tiring.
2. They May Seem Extra Cuddly (or a Bit Distant)
Some dogs want extra love after boarding. Others need a little quiet time to adjust. Both reactions are okay. Give them space, offer comfort, and keep the evening calm.
3. Eating and Drinking May Be Off for a Day
It’s common for dogs to eat or drink less (or more) for a short time. This usually settles within 24 hours. I always keep water available and stick to your feeding routine during their stay.
4. They Should Return to Routine Quickly
By the next day, most dogs fall right back into their normal rhythm—eating, walking, sleeping as usual. If your dog was nervous at first, this bounce-back is a sign they felt safe and supported during their stay.
5. Watch for Anything Unusual
It’s rare, but if you notice vomiting, coughing, or persistent behavioral changes, call your vet. I maintain a clean, calm home and monitor each dog daily—but open communication is key to your dog’s wellbeing.
