What to Do If Your Dog Has a Seizure

A calm, step-by-step guide for dog owners in Gateshead

Witnessing your dog have a seizure can be frightening—but knowing how to respond can make all the difference. While seizures can be caused by a range of issues (like epilepsy, toxins, or illness), what you do in the moment matters most.

At Chrysidis Pet Care, I’ve cared for dogs of all ages and health needs for over 30 years, including those with anxiety, neurological conditions, or special care plans. Here’s a calm, clear guide on what to do if your dog ever has a seizure.

1. Stay Calm

Dogs are unaware of what’s happening during a seizure. Your calm energy will help them feel safe during recovery.

2. Do NOT Touch Their Mouth or Restrain Them

Dogs do not swallow their tongues during seizures Trying to hold them down or move their head can lead to injury (for both of you)

3. Time the Seizure

Use your phone to time how long it lasts.

If it lasts under 2 minutes, make note of it and inform your vet If it lasts over 5 minutes, or they have multiple in a row, this is a medical emergency—go to the vet immediately

4. Clear the Area

Move any furniture or objects they could hit or get tangled in. Turn off bright lights or loud noises.

5. Speak Softly and Let Them Rest Afterwards

After a seizure, your dog may seem confused or anxious. Let them recover in a quiet, familiar space and speak gently to reassure them.

6. Call Your Vet

Even if it’s short, always call your vet to report the episode and get guidance. They may recommend monitoring, testing, or a treatment plan.
