Summer safety tips every dog owner should know
As temperatures rise in Gateshead, it’s important to remember that dogs don’t tolerate heat the same way humans do. What feels warm to us can quickly become dangerous—even life-threatening—for your dog.
At Chrysidis Pet Care, I prioritise calm, shaded walks and careful monitoring during hot weather. Here’s what you need to know to keep your dog safe this summer.
🥵 How Hot Is Too Hot?
Dogs begin to struggle when temperatures climb above 20°C, especially if they’re:
Brachycephalic (flat-faced breeds like pugs or bulldogs) Overweight Senior dogs or puppies Dark-coated or long-haired Not used to the heat
By 24°C+, the risk of heatstroke increases significantly during exercise or prolonged sun exposure.
☀️ Summer Safety Tips for Dogs
1. Avoid Walks During the Hottest Part of the Day
Walk early in the morning or late evening Always check the pavement—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws
2. Hydration is Critical
Carry water on walks Add ice cubes to water bowls Keep bowls clean and topped up all day
3. Provide Cool, Shady Rest Areas
Indoors with fans or breezy windows Outdoors in shaded spots—not direct sun Cooling mats and damp towels can also help
4. Watch for Signs of Overheating
Excessive panting Drooling Bright red gums Weakness or collapse Vomiting
📞 Call your vet immediately if you notice these symptoms.
5. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car
Even with windows cracked, a car can heat up to dangerous levels in minutes. It’s simply not worth the risk.
