How to Prepare Your Dog for a New Pet Sitter

Tips to make the transition stress-free for both of you.

Introducing your dog to a new pet sitter can feel a little nerve-wracking—especially if it’s their first time staying away from home. The good news? With the right preparation, the process can be smooth, calm, and even enjoyable for your pet.

I’m Kyriakos Chrysidis, and I’ve been caring for dogs for over 30 years here in Gateshead. At Chrysidis Pet Care, I provide calm, one-on-one pet sitting from my home—so dogs feel safe and cared for.

Here’s how to prepare your dog for their first stay:

1. Start with Familiarity

Bring something that smells like home: a blanket, their favourite toy, or their bed. Familiar items help reduce anxiety and create a sense of comfort in a new space.

2. Share Their Routine

Dogs love predictability. Let me know your dog’s feeding times, walk preferences, sleep habits, and any quirks. I’ll follow their routine carefully to keep things feeling familiar.

3. Stay Calm at Drop-Off

Dogs sense our energy. A quick, confident goodbye helps your pet settle faster. Rest assured, I’ll take it from there with calm care and reassurance.

4. Provide Medical and Contact Info

If your dog takes medications or has any allergies, please share that in writing. Include emergency contact details and your vet’s info—just in case.

5. Book a Trial Day (Optional)

If you’re unsure how your dog will adjust, try a short day care session first. It gives them a chance to explore, meet me, and build trust—so their longer stay feels familiar.
