How to Choose a Pet Sitter for an Older Dog

What older pets need—and what to ask before booking

As dogs age, their needs change—and so should the care they receive. If you’re the proud owner of a senior dog, finding a gentle, experienced pet sitter becomes especially important.

At Chrysidis Pet Care in Gateshead, I’ve spent over 30 years caring for dogs, including many seniors with mobility, medication, and comfort needs. Here’s how to find the right sitter for your older dog—and how I make their stay feel safe, familiar, and stress-free.

What Older Dogs Need from a Sitter

A calm environment with soft spaces to rest Consistent routines to avoid confusion or stress Close monitoring for signs of pain or discomfort Patience and experience with slower mobility or medical needs Access to gentle walks or outside time without pressure

Questions to Ask Before Booking

Have you cared for senior dogs before? (My answer: Yes—many. I understand how to support them physically and emotionally.) Will they be in a loud or group setting? (No. I only take a few dogs at a time in my home-based, quiet environment.) Can I bring their bed or comfort items? (Yes, absolutely—it helps them settle faster.) Are you able to give medication? (Yes, I regularly administer oral meds as instructed.) Do you follow feeding and walking routines? (Yes—I mirror their home habits to reduce stress.)
